Control unit for ground heating ETO2

Thermotech GEO®System  ETO2 is an electronic controller that automatically controls ice and snow melting in the ground or, for example, in gutters.

Ice is formed from a combination of moisture and low temperature. The ETO2 control unit records, with the help of a sensor in the ground surface (ETOG-55), both temperature and moisture, and only starts up when these two parameters have been recorded.

The ETO2 unit can, together with two ground sensors, control two different temperature zones and keep a set minimum temperature in the loop using an actuator.

For the system to be activated and heat the surface, the detected temperature first needs to fall below the set value, where upon the sensor's heating element starts heating up to melt any snow, and moisture is detected by the ground sensor. The ground surface is heated for as long as moisture is present, plus a set time delay so that all snow and ice really does melt across the entire surface.

For the best operation, the ground sensor should be installed at a location that is representative of the surface to be heated, which is where most snow and water normally accumulates.

With the aid of the included mounting plates, the sensor should be installed horizontally with its upper edge level with the surrounding surface. Because of the loads that the sensor may be subjected to in the form of vehicle traffic, it should be mounted onto a stable surface and cemented in place.

Leave a hole for the ground sensor that is around Ø75 mm, so that there is sufficient room to cement the sensor in place. You should position the ground sensors so that a slight incline towards the sensor is created. This ensures that snow melted by the heating element itself in the sensor will flow towards the sensor. Otherwise, the sensor will mistakenly register that the ground surface is snow-free.

When connecting the sensor cable, it is important to lay the cable in cable conduits not adjacent to other live equipment, which could interfere with the signal from the sensor. The sensor is supplied with 10 metres of cable, which can be extended up to 200 metres.
